Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students demanded immediate suspension of online classes for the 2020 batch. Students sought help from the authority as it’s becoming difficult to attend the classes due to challenges proposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
FTII administration on the other hand reaches out saying many students are attending the online classes and only one batch is currently allowed to conduct classes. They made it clear that the online sessions will continue as planned.
In FTII Student Association (FSA) official statement, “We are witnessing an exponential increase in cases each day and people are struggling to avail medical facilities. FTII administration has been enforcing mandatory online classes for the newly admitted 2020 batch students.”
“FTII chairman Mr Shekhar Kapur is reluctant to meet us and has given us a date 11 days later from now for a meeting to discuss our urgent concerns. We are sad and concerned to state that students, faculties, staff members and families are getting affected not just by COVID-19, but also by financial and mental health issues associated with it”, said FSA.
The students have raised concern over the mandatory online classes conducted by the institute, which violates the attendance criteria guidelines issued by the University Grant Commission (UGC).
In midst of chaos, FTII Director Bhupendra Kainthola said, “Online classes are on only for 2020. Connectivity and other issues are there, but still, students are regular in their classes and in direct contact with their teachers. Teachers are also ready to help them by phone or e-mail. When on campus, a recap or review of these online sessions would also be made.”
Earlier, FTII academic governing council decided to conduct the online classes for benefit of students those who are interested so that online session can continue as per planned duration
