According to FMS official website, the total number of student intake has been increased this year to 251 for admission session 2020–2022.
General Category (seats-101): If you belong to the GEMs (General Engineer Male) category, the hurdle is maximum for you. Since the competition is immense, you’ll need a minimum of 99.3+ percentile + having 95+ percentile in the VARC section. One should not forget FMS gives 40%(maximum among sections) to the VARC score, so one should aim to score as high as possible.
Now, if you belong to GEFs (General Engineer Female) category, you’ll get additional 3% marks once you’re through the interview round. However, the target to conversion remains almost the same i.e 99+ percentile overall. People who belong to an academic stream other than engineering don’t have any such advantage during the selection process. They are treated as par with engineers. However, many students in this category generally have a better verbal ability which will be an added advantage in GD+PI and extempore round.
OBC Category( seats-69): Students those who belongs to OBC non-creamy layer category, they have a slight advantage over General in terms of cutoffs and final selection process. The safe score to get a call from FMS would be 95+ percentile in CAT. However, if you score 99+ then you just need average marks in GD+PI and extempore to convert the call.
SC Category (seats-37): Candidates belonging to SC category generally have a lower cutoff. However, in order to convert call their need to score substantially high in their category as the number of seats is less compare to OBC or general category student. To get a mere call, 80.5+ percentile will do the job. But in order to convert, one needs to score exceptionally well in the selection process. To get a confirmed seat, the candidate should aim for 95+ percentile in CAT.
ST Category (Seats- 15): The cutoff for ST category is lower than SC. Students can expect a call at 70+ percentile. However, due to low number of seats, the competition is immense. Best way to convert a call is to score maximum in CAT and above average in GD+PI and Extempore.
EWS Category (seats- 25): This year on-wards FMS will have reserved seat for EWS category students after the government introduced 10% reservation for the economical weaker section in all government jobs and institutes. The is new and hence the possible cutoff cannot be predicted. However, to be on safe side cutoff for EWS will be more than OBC. Hence the requisite percentile to get a call should be 90+.
PWD and CW Category( seats- 10 each): It’s hard to determine the consolidate cutoff for these categories. The student should aim to score as high as possible. Generally, 60+ percentile is a safe zone to get and convert the call.
(Generally, FMS calls 2000+ students to fill 200 students. Since the no. of seats has increased this year, one can expect 2500+ calls to fill 251 odd seats)
